What if my child is nervous or anxious?

At Northeast Children’s Dentistry we utilize many different techniques to help your child have a positive dental experience. We take into account your child’s medical history and past dental history to choose the least invasive technique possible. Every child is different, as a Pediatric Dentist Dr. Lawhon was specifically trained to work with children and take special care in evaluating the individual child’s needs.

Here are just a few of the techniques we use at Northeast Children’s Dentistry:

*Tell-Show Do: We tell your child what we are going to do, show them the how and then we do it! Including your child in the process often reduces their anxiety and allows for trust to build.

* Nitrous-oxide analgesia: (laughing gas): We provide the use of nitrous-oxide to assist our nervous patients if needed. This technique can help reduce fear and assist with children who have active gag reflexes by reducing the occurrence of gagging.

* Oral Conscious sedation (happy juice): We provide oral conscious sedation for our more fearful patients. We have a special sedation room where you and your child will relax while the “happy juice” takes effect. Then we will wheel your child (if not to big) in the wagon to the operatory room. The sedation drug of choice is specifically calculated and determined by your child’s medical history as well as their weight and size.

* Hospital Dentistry: Dr. Lawhon is certified to perform dental surgery under general anesthesia in a hospital setting. Some of our patients needs are best met in a hospital setting, where all teeth can be restored at one time.
